The Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation, Atlantic Superstore, Halifax Seaport and many other public companies also contributed to the success of the festival with generous support. The Canadian Navy also supported the event by providing barges, boats, harbour security and volunteers. And it will play another large role in a waterfront event this summer. “Halifax will be ‘the place’ to be in Canada during the week of June 28 to July 2,” said Capt. Craig Walkington, Maritime Forces Atlantic Canadian Naval Centennial Co-ordinator. “An international fleet of over 22 visiting naval vessels, accompanied by the Atlantic Canadian Fleet, will assemble in Halifax to formally celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy.” There will be a fly-past of the internationally renowned Snowbirds and other maritime aircraft and 5,000 to 7,000 visiting sailors are expected to attend the week-long celebration. Planning for Tall Ships 2009 began more than two years in advance, as more than 40 ships and 2,000 sailors attended the five-day Halifax event. From Halifax, ships visited ports in Lunenburg, Port Hawkesbury, Louisbourg, Sydney, Pictou and Pugwash. The next Tall Ships event is expected to be held in 2012. It created the Park After Dark pilot program that provides an affordable, safe alternative for the overnight winter parking ban, and is a presenter of the Waterfront Winterfest, Feb. 26-28.
