Western BureauDefender John Barrett scored his first goal of the season as defending champions Montego Bay United (MBU) widened the gap at the top of the Red Stripe Premier League with a 1-0 victory over University of the West Indies (UWI) yesterday at Wespow Park.Barrett was on target in the 35th minute when his stooping header beat UWI goalkeeper Amal Knight at his near post. The win took them to 34 points and got them back to winning ways, following their stumble last week to Humble Lion. It was UWI’s second-successive loss and kept them on 29 points, three less than second place Tivoli Gardens FC.”The result speaks for itself. We dominated the game, and sometimes we need only one goal for three points. We got that today from Barrett,” said assistant coach Dillon Thelwell.”It was a good game tactically for us. We played our passing game, and we feel that these kinds of performances can only help our confidence going deeper into the season,” added Thelwell.”We are beginning to look good with our passing game. I think we are on the right track,” stated Thelwell.UWI, who came into the match in joint second place on points alongside Tivoli Gardens, never looked comfortable. It was unlike them to go the entire half of a match without a shot on goal. In fact, their first real attempt came in the 92nd minute when Jamie Robinson forced a save out of Jacomeno Barrett in the MBU goal.TOP STRIKERCorey Hylton and top striker Dino Williams, while having good spells in attack never threatened Knight at the other end either, except in the 12th minute when Hylton was gifted an opportunity, which he spurned.UWI head coach Marcel Gayle said thatthe game went according to plan for a top-of-the-table clash but that Montego Bay wanted it more.”For a top-of-the-table clash, I think it went as was expected. We were cagey early on, and that allowed MBU to settle quickly, and we never got back into it,” he said.”But I am still proud of how we played, though, ideally, we would have liked to put some effort on target. We will be looking to rebound on Wednesday, and that in itself will not be an easy match for us either,” said Gayle.
